hello to lectures

date: Monday, August 29, 2011

lectures officially start tomorrow today.

*sighs*

attended PoA, Econs and Math 1 preparatory lectures last week. PoA lecture was alright. i was really looking forward to it somehow, probably because it's a brand new subject so i attended the lecture with an open mind. my lecturer is a really funny man. felt fortunate to have him as both our lecturer and tutor. got to learn a few basics here and there and i felt like i could get the hang of it, especially the part about balance sheet, and there i was thinking, "hey this might be a component that i can score at!" only to find out that balance sheet wouldn't be tested in exams since everything in the real world is being computerised now. either way, it seems to be a module that i may take a liking to! (:

econs was... a bore to be frank. particularly cos my lecturer seemed to be mumbling most of the time. we were learning about consumer demand and familiar terms like 'normal goods' and 'inferior goods' popped up every now and then, except this time round everything is more in-depth plus there were a lot of graphs. i couldn't really follow the lecture well since i wasn't sure what he was trying to get at. so i went to the library to borrow this book which he recommended. did some reading and everything was so much clearer! thankfully our tutor isn't the same guy. *heaves relief*

attended math 1 and i got excited to amanda's amusement because the lecturer was a caucasian! :D there's something about their accent that mesmerises don't ask me why and what. another funny man. he often drops 'invisible jokes' here and there during the lesson and the lecture theater would probably be roaring with laughter if he didn't say the jokes so softly. or maybe he meant for it to be this way. but if you were to listen carefully, you will hear his vague jokes and i couldn't stop laughing at them, leaving xiao hui and amanda bewildered at my reaction. plus he kept drawing smileys here and there! so cute haha! unfortunately he isn't our permanent lecture. he merely took the option b people for a prep lecture that day. hopefully my official lecturer will be as funny as him?

which got the few of us to talk about 'teachers' after the lecture. and we all agreed that it really matters who the teacher is. well, to some maybe not. but i know for me it definitely is the case.

oh yes, as for the content of the lecture, we were basically doing graphing and calculus. i tried very hard to listen with an open mind because my brain tends to shut down whenever it comes to math. apparently now instead of x and y, everything has to be changed to q and p terms, where q is quantity and p is price. in the module of math 1, econs and math seem to be highly interlinked and there were the mathematically correct graph and the economically correct graph but both of which are accepted. sounds cheem huh. to my amazement there seemed to be a few international students who have never studied calculus before and i really wonder how they are going to catch up because calculus is a topic that needs lots of practice and figuring out. but then again international students have their way of working hard so im pretty sure they will catch up in no time.

alright i've got to head to bed now or i won't be able to wake up tomorrow! tomorrow's my first Intro to Business and Management lecture, aka IBM lecture and this module is frankly speaking the one im worried about because it's the module which the seniors have referred to as the killer module. apparently there's a lot of writing, an area that i definitely do better at than at calculations but hearing them talk about it like that shakes up my confidence. but again i'm going to attend the lecture with a smile and pray hard that all is well. but even with this optimism i feel unconvinced because it seems that the lecturer is really out to 'kill' us. he has just sent us a pdf file of 106 pages containing nothing but essays that have been attempted by previous students. goodness!

okay i really need to go sleep now before i get a headache thinking about all these. =/
