words of wisdom

date: Saturday, October 23, 2010

these are Mr Low’s 3 life’s lessons from his last lecture in tpjc:

Life lesson Number 1:

Never forget your successes, never belittle your
successes. Celebrate your successes.

Recognise the good that you can do, have done and will have the potential to do. Know that success is not
necessarily tied to reputation, and that reputation, however excellent, does
not necessarily breed success.

Lesson Number 2:

Many people in the world will tell you that you are your
worst enemy. When the world sits on top of you and beats you down, far
from accepting you are your worst enemy, you must be your best friend.

Review, reflect and learn from yourself, for yourself. Push yourself.
Encourage yourself, challenge yourself and believe in yourself. When the
world is bent on selling you out, when the world seems set on putting you
down, only you can convince yourself that you will not be defeated. And
you owe it to the future ‘you’ – that person you are so capable of becoming
– you owe it to that person to give yourself the fighting chance to be the
best that you can possibly be.

Life lesson number 3:

Be an agent of change. Don’t procrastinate, don’t
hesitate. Be an agent of change. Make things happen for you.

And don’t stop there. We live in a world riddled with disease, suffering and injustice. Be that agent of change. Lead productive and meaningful lives.

and other parts of his speech that are worth mentioning:

There is an old adage which says that you cannot change the cards
life deals out to you, only how you play the hand. Rather than submit to
the crimson tide of self-doubt, rally yourself, and remind yourself of your
strengths and weaknesses. Don’t stop there. Learn to expand your
repertoire of skills – don’t get lazy. Endeavour to eradicate your weaknesses – don’t be lazy. Remind yourself of what you want to achieve, how far you want to go, and how big your dreams in life can truly be. Pursue your passions to the greatest extents, with the biggest appetite possible.

Dear JC 2s, in addition to your own successes, in addition to building
your self confidence, sense of self, you must dream big, because only your
big dreams will change the world we live in.

If there were ever a time to dare, to make a difference, to embark on something worth doing, it is now. Not for any grand cause, necessarily –  but for something that tugs at your heart. Something that is worth your aspiration. Something that is your dream. You owe it to yourself to make your days count! Have fun. Dig deep. Dream big.

Know, though, that things worth doing rarely come easy. There will be times when you want to turn around, pack it up and call it quits. Those times tell you that you are pushing yourself, and that you are not afraid to learn by trying. Persist. You must persist! Because with an idea, determination and the right tools, you can do great things.

Let your instincts, your intellect and your heart guide you. Trust. Believe in the incredible power of the human mind and the human heart, of doing something that makes a difference, of working hard, of laughing and hoping, of lasting friends, of all the things that will cross your path. Next year marks the start of something new, it brings the hope of something great.

Anything is possible.
